How It All Started
While most 26-year-old women are toasting champagne when the ball drops on New Year’s Eve, on January 1, 2013, best friends Jessica Boyd and Maureen Ochola were instead imagining something groundbreaking for their hometown of Columbia, SC. On their visits home from Durham, NC, where Jessica was finishing business school, and Atlanta, where Maureen was working full-time as an engineer, they noticed a growing population of women in Columbia who were choosing to sport their natural kinks, curls, coils, and locs. What they also noticed as a lack of support and safe space for women
They set out on a mission to nurture and continue growing this beautifully renewed “hairitage” right at home. Best friends and Quench Natural Beauty Boutique co-founders, Jessica Boyd and Maureen Ochola, are on a mission to redefine beauty in South Carolina's "Famously Hot" capital city. With big dreams, in October 2013, they launched their local natural hair empowerment initiative as @QuenchSC on Instagram. Taking a cue from wildly popular accounts that feature natural-haired women from all over , the duo began exclusively featuring naturalistas right here in Columbia.
